Reddi Plumbing provides service for all brands of garbage disposals. Our expert plumbers can determine why your unit isn’t working and provide a cost for repair or replacement.

Garbage disposals typically last 10-15 years, though if you are particularly rough on one, the blades and motor can wear down much faster. While we do offer repairs, many times we simply replace the unit, as the cost for a new one is very low.

If your disposal isn’t working, there are a few things you can check on your own before calling a plumber. If the unit has no power at all, check the bottom of the disposal for a reset button. Pressing this button may restore operation. If that doesn’t do it, check your home’s breaker box to make sure you still have power to the unit.

Another common problem is the unit hums, but doesn’t grind anything. This could be because of a jam. Don’t run the unit in this situation, as you could burn out the motor. Unplug the garbage disposal and make sure it has now power. You can then inspect inside the unit to see if something is wedged in the blades. Most garbage disposals have a hex key on the bottom that you can use a wrench to turn, this may free up the blades.

If you do ever need to reach inside the garbage disposal, always make sure it is unplugged, and always wear thick safety gloves.
